Brookdale preps for future with near-term plan

Brookdale Senior Living recently bought 41 of the facilities it was previously leasing for a combined $610 million. It’s part of a larger plan. CEO Cindy Baier says, put simply, it’s better to buy than rent. Money can be transferred to the company’s shareholders rather than their landlords, and they are granted more flexibility in how they manage the locations. Plus, a joint venture with Welltower real estate investment trust meant the company could buy five of the properties below the fair market value. After this purchase, Brookdale will own 66% of its consolidated units.

Stan Stanley has lived through a lot: the Spanish Flu, the Great Depression, World War II, and the COVID-19 pandemic. And now he's 105 years old. “I didn’t think I would ever see it," Stan says. "And then I saw it for real. I’m crying.” Stan served in World War II as a radio operator on bombers. His plane was shot down, and he crashed in occupied Holland. Stan hopes to head back there one last time. “I’d like to see the roads and the houses that I stayed in and everything else.”
